Once upon a time there was a tortoise. He was ugly down to his very soul. He was the leader of the Senate Majority. Many in the kingdom never realized how powerful this position could be until the tortoise ascended to it.
One of the amazing things about the Senate, the world’s greatest deliberative body, is that it was designed by the founders to provide a check on the power of the presidency. It was intentionally designed to prevent anyone appointing themselves a king. This didn’t happen with King Orange however. The tortoise turned the Senate into a rubber stamp for King Orange’s hateful, evil policies.
After Democrats took over the House, the senate became a legislative graveyard. The tortoise refused to bring anything to a vote. The Senate was where good legislation meant to benefit society went to die.
When King Orange was impeached, the tortoise admitted that he would work lockstep with him to guide the trial in the Senate. Senators were supposed to be a jury, like in any other trial. However, the tortoise didn’t want to allow witnesses. He wished to skip the entire process and rush to an acquittal. It was insanity. A show trial.
Just like King Orange, this ugly tortoise would ultimately have to answer to voters. In what remained of democracy, the Kingdom would have the ultimate say. Whether the process would be fair and legitimate remained to be seen.
