Once upon a time there was a Kingdom where women were free to make decisions about their own bodies. The highest court in all the land had ruled that a woman could terminate a pregnancy if they wished.
However, a vocal conservative minority wished otherwise. For years, they protested the Court’s ruling, blocking the entrance to abortion clinics, and harassed and even threatened the lives of doctors who performed the procedure. Yet women still got them.
Quietly and gradually, they began to employ a new strategy: work on electing local, state, and federal officials dedicated to overturning the landmark Supreme Court ruling. These representatives would then appoint conservative judges who agreed with them. The plan was simple. Bring a case to the Supreme Court where a conservative majority existed.
Then, one day, King Orange found an opening to do the conservatives’ bidding. The most prominent justice on the Court, the Notorious RBG, passed away. With a nomination and confirmation, he could cement the Court’s conservative majority for decades.
The justice he selected was a woman. However, she was a conservative and devout Catholic who believed that women did not have reproductive rights. She belonged to a religious group that believed that women should be subservient to their husbands. No matter that she easily walked through every door that the Notorious RBG opened for her. Would she follow the Constitution, or her conservative religious beliefs? Only her confirmation would reveal her choice.
Despite this nominee’s gender, nearly all these representatives and judges were men. None had a uterus and would never know what it was like to be forced to carry a pregnancy to term.
These men hated women, plain and simple. They were afraid of losing their male privilege, which women were challenging in every area of society, politics, and business. The surest way to keep them from power was to keep them barefoot and pregnant.
